Before and after care

Follow the advice given to you at your appointment, and contact Skin9 Studio if you are unsure.

Chemical Peels: Before Care
  • Avoid active ingredients. Stop using retinol and exfoliating products, including AHA/BHA acids, at least 48–72 hours before treatment unless your skincare professional recommends otherwise.
  • Protect your skin from sun exposure. Avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure before your appointment. Inform your provider if you have a recent sunburn.
  • Avoid additional exfoliation. Do not schedule waxing, aggressive exfoliation or other resurfacing procedures close to your chemical peel without professional guidance.
  • Keep your skin hydrated. Maintain a gentle skincare routine with a suitable moisturizer.
  • Inform your esthetician. Tell Sarah about any allergies, current medications, recent cosmetic procedures, skin irritation, cold sores or previous reactions to chemical peels.
  • Arrive with clean skin. Avoid heavy makeup if possible.
Chemical Peels: After Care
  • Immediately after your treatment. Mild redness, tightness, sensitivity or warmth may occur. Skin may feel dry or appear slightly flushed. Peeling may begin within the next few days, depending on the type and depth of the peel. Avoid touching, rubbing or picking at the treated skin.
  • The first 24–48 hours. Cleanse gently with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, following your provider's instructions. Apply a gentle, non-comedogenic moisturizer to maintain hydration. Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and activities causing excessive sweating until the skin has settled. Avoid strenuous exercise if it increases facial heat or irritation. Do not use exfoliating brushes, facial scrubs or cleansing devices.
  • Days 3–7 and during peeling. Allow skin to shed naturally. Do not pick, pull or peel loose skin. Continue gentle skincare and moisturizing. Avoid retinol, prescription retinoids, exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA), benzoyl peroxide and other irritating ingredients until cleared by your provider. Avoid waxing, threading over irritated skin and additional resurfacing procedures. Wait until your recommended treatment interval before scheduling another peel.
  • Sun protection. Minimize direct sunlight and seek shade. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 daily as tolerated and recommended by your provider. Reapply every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating. Avoid tanning beds and intentional tanning.
  • What to avoid. Picking or manually removing peeling skin. Strong skincare products and unapproved home treatments. Excessive heat, friction and direct sun exposure. Additional facial treatments before recovery.
  • When to contact your provider. Contact Skin9 Studio if you experience worsening pain, significant swelling, blistering, spreading redness, unusual discharge or signs of infection. Seek prompt medical assessment for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Questions, answered

What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a professional exfoliating treatment designed to improve the appearance of skin texture, uneven tone, congestion and certain pigmentation concerns. The treatment is selected based on your skin condition and goals.
Will my skin peel after a chemical peel?
Not necessarily. Some people experience visible flaking or peeling, while others notice dryness or a smoother appearance without significant shedding. This depends on the type and strength of the peel.
How many chemical peel sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies according to your skin concerns, the peel being used and your response to treatment. Sarah will recommend an appropriate treatment plan following your skin assessment.
Can I wear makeup after a chemical peel?
Your skin may be more sensitive immediately afterward. Makeup should only be resumed when recommended by your provider, based on the type of peel and your skin's recovery.
Can chemical peels help with acne scars and pigmentation?
Some chemical peels may improve the appearance of superficial pigmentation, post-acne marks and uneven texture. Deeper scars or persistent pigmentation may require other treatments or a combination of approaches.
Are chemical peels suitable for sensitive skin?
Suitability depends on your skin condition, sensitivity and the formulation used. A consultation is recommended to determine the safest treatment approach.
Can I use retinol after my chemical peel?
Avoid retinol and other potentially irritating active ingredients until your skin has recovered and Sarah confirms it is appropriate to resume them.
